Celebrating the Wins

Wins large and small.

The Day after an Election and Other Days Too

When we see the results of an election there are almost always wins and losses. These larger wins and losses are a great example for the itty bitty wins and losses that we experience on an average Wednesday. It can be so easy to focus on a couple of losses even amidst a bunch of wins.

Last night as I was watching the results come in I found myself focusing all my attention on a couple of races that I was watching in other states. These races were so close but the person I was wanting to win lost. As my stress level was going up and my disappointment was big and heavy I realized that I had not focused any attention at all on the wins in my local election as well as other wins throughout the country.

This happens to me all the time. I will get a 92 on a test and I focus all my attention on the couple of things I did wrong instead of acknowledging all that I did right. This isn’t a terrible habit. Because, as I say often, practicing gratitude is not about ignoring problems. It is important to see the world with eyes wide open. But so very often my eyes are not open to what is going right.

I’m glad that I have been practicing gratitude for so long because it keeps this self-awareness top-of-mind. Now, thanks to my gratitude habit, when I catch myself catastrophizing it reminds me to focus on what is going right too. And celebrating the itty bitty wins each and every day helps me to aim for more of what I want in my life. One way I celebrate these wins is by sharing what I am grateful for about each one. I did this about the election results last night and I do this every night to acknowledge the little things that went right during my day.

What wins are you grateful for from the election as well as the itty bitty wins from your day?
