To Have Not or to Have

Celebrating what we have through gratitude.

Today

It can be so easy to look forward with worry or anticipation. To look back with regret or nostalgia. But today calls for your attention. Today is here. Today is real.

And even when we are present in what is real today it can be so easy to focus on all that we are lacking. All that is not present in our lives. The loved ones who have passed. The money spent or unearned. Groceries to buy. Friendships and loves lost.

But what is present in our lives that we can appreciate? The basics like hot water, electricity, shelter and a place to rest our heads. The friends still here. The work that fulfills us in some ways. Nature always there whether we ignore it or not.

So much gratitude to be found. So many blessings to count.

One lesson I have learned is that grief is real. We don't want to skip past grief or any difficult emotions as we find gratitude. There is enough room for both. And actually, when I can find gratitude it reminds me of all the resources I already have that can help me through the difficult emotions, all I am lacking, the bad.

Find gratitude. Not to erase or ignore the bad. But to remind ourselves that it isn't all bad. And in doing so to call in more of the good.

quoteHe is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.
~Epictetus
