Finding Gratitude is Creativity

To see all around you differently.

A Reality That Wasn’t There Before

Sometimes gratitude just spontaneously emerges. Other times I decide I am going to be grateful and choose to find gratitude that wasn’t there before. Either way I see the parallels with creativity. Isn’t creativity the same way? Sometimes we just spontaneously add that unexpected combination of ingredients when cooking, add a splash of color to our painting, words spring forth and we write them out, a melody pops into our heads. But other times we are feeling stuck but we know we need to come up with an interesting recipe, we have to finish writing to meet a deadline, or we know we are long overdue to write a new song. So we sit down to deliberately access our creativity.

Gratitude is creative. And just like creativity if we sit around waiting for inspiration to strike we may grow old waiting. Creatives know that sometimes you just have to show up to do the creative work even when you’re not feeling it. That is what I love about the daily gratitude practice. It puts gratitude on our agenda. Giving it a deadline. So we show up and create a reality that wasn’t there before. A reality of gratefulness. Whether we are feeling it or not.
