Grateful for My Ex

A chart-topping pop song is all about gratitude.

Thank U, Next

There has been a theme lately for me about gratitude for my exes. First, during therapy we have been talking about my past relationships, the good, the bad, what I learned and how I grew. Then, this popped up in my fb feed memories:

Finally, I keep hearing this Ariana Grande song called, “Thank U, Next”. How surprising to hear a pop song about gratitude. And it actually had seven weeks as the number one song. In the song she thanks her exes and even her estranged father for the experiences and how those relationships, good and bad, helped her grow. Here it is with lyrics if you’d like to give it a listen.

Thank U, Next Lyrics

How often do we reflect on relationships from our past: Ex-husbands, ex-wives, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, ex-lovers, ex-friends, ex-roommates, ex-coworkers or anyone else who is no longer in our lives? And if we do reflect on these past relationships, how often do we do so with gratitude?

I have learned that genuine gratitude is a powerful tool for letting go. I learned this from a Curandera which I wrote about here. But also I have experienced this power first-hand. Once I can find genuine gratitude it helps me to say goodbye, break the cord and get untangled from any lingering ties to a past relationship.

It also just feels good to leave relationships in a good way. Through our gratitude we honor the good, the lessons learned, the time we invested, and we also honor ourselves by saying goodbye to something that isn’t meant for us.

quote

I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex.
