Mining for Possibilities

Replacing your reactions with possibilities.

What is Possible?

Our reactions, whether emotions, actions or just thoughts, are so mindless and automatic. That isn't always a bad thing. I mean, really, it might just save our asses when we are driving. But outside of those times when split-second reaction time is necessary we can change our automatic patterns.

There are so many more options, seemingly infinite possibilities, beyond that well-worn rut we have dug. But it can be so hard to see those possibilities. To have new insights.

When I want to see things from a different perspective I like to ask other people for their advice. They naturally have a different perspective because they are not me and don't have all of the experiences I have that reward that same old response. Collaborations like these can be very powerful but it is also important fro me to remember that I have the power within me to see things from different perspectives. And you do too.

Finding gratitude is one way of seeing things from a different perspective and it is a way that all of us have practiced. But there are others as well. Think of a situation that is challenging for you. Maybe you have a feeling that your old ways of seeing things won't serve you in this new situation. Or maybe you just want to try something new. These questions can help you to see things differently and to uncover new possibilities.

  • What are you grateful for about this situation as it is now?
  • What emotions do you feel about this situation?
  • What other emotions are underneath that?
  • What emotions are you surprised to feel about this situation?
  • If you knew that you would be safe and supported how might that change your view?
  • If you had unlimited resources how would it change your view?
  • If you didn't care what anyone thought of you how would it change your view?
  • What are you grateful could come of this situation if you were open to it?
  • What are you grateful to have learned about yourself, your hopes, your fears, your values?
  • What opportunities awaits you in this situation?
  • In what ways are you willing to grow?
  • What is possible here if you allow it?
  • What else is possible?
