Your Year of Gratitude

This is your Year … your Year of Gratitude

What if instead of writing in your gratitude journal for a couple days or even a couple weeks, you committed to gratitude for an entire year?

How would your life improve?

If you’re anything like us, you’ll appreciate all the good shit in your life that you tend to ignore. This helps you discover who you are at your best, what really matters to you, and helps you celebrate each little success. You’ll also feel good.

Throughout history wise men and women have encouraged us to feel grateful for what we have. Why? Very simply because gratitude makes us feel good.Richard Carlson, Ph.D.

You deserve to feel good.

I hate the word deserve because it implies that some people deserve good things and others do not. Well, I don’t believe that. When I say deserve I mean EVERYONE DESERVES to feel good. Yes, everyone. Even though you did those fucked up things, you still deserve to feel good.

If you commit to practicing gratitude your life will improve. I know that sounds grandiose, but it’s true. You know why? Because we find what we’re looking for. When you are focused on finding the good in your life you will find more of it.

May you find what you are looking for.Chinese proverb

If you want to get all factual and shit, let’s look at the research. People who write down five things a day they are grateful for feel better about their lives, have less pain, sleep longer and better, have more energy, are more likely to make progress towards important goals, feel more connected to others, are more determined, and they are less stressed and less depressed. This sounds like a better life to me.

Here’s what I’ve found through my gratitude practice.

I have stronger connections with people in my life. I find the good in everything. I have a renewed sense of wonder. You know that thing we have as a child where we can stare at a grain of sand and watch it sparkle? I’ve got that. Wonder is all about being present and the more I practice gratitude the more I practice being present and finding appreciation for what I experience in the present no matter what. Yes, no matter what. That means that there aren’t really fewer things to complain about. Bad shit still happens, physical pain, divorce, death, job loss, illness.

Real life isn’t always going to be perfect or go our way, but the recurring acknowledgment of what is working in our lives can help us not only to survive but surmount our difficulties.Sarah Ban Breathnach

Yes, as they say, shit happens. But gratitude helps me to notice it, find appreciation, accept it, and release it. So instead of staying stuck there, bitching and moaning about it, I bounce back. And through this practice I’ve found that choosing to complain and appreciate are not all that different. It just depends if we choose to find the good in a situation or find the bad.

So, yes. We choose gratitude.

And so do you. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here right now reading this. We choose gratitude because as Henrik Harlaut said, “Every day is a beautiful thing.” Because we aren’t victims of our circumstances, we make choices and get shit done.

Sometimes we forget. Sometimes I grumble, “pssht, I’ve got to be fucking grateful” when I don’t want to crawl out of my warm bed to post my gratitude. But here’s the thing. I say the same thing about brushing my teeth. But I get up and brush them because the habit is so much a part of who I am. And now thanks to my daily gratitude practice, being grateful is a huge part of who I am. So while it isn’t always easy to get started, it always feels good in the moment.
