Try This When Someone Rains On Your Parade

Haters Gonna Hate

Staying On Your Path

There are always going to be haters, naysayers and complainers. And it can be easy to sink into that negativity. It happens and it’s not that big of a deal as long as we get back on our path.

I was confronted with this in a big way this weekend when someone was raining on my parade, talking shit about my work and even my gratitude practice. It stung and my self-doubt grew loud. But then I had some pretty magic timing of things that helped. First, I did the one thing that has been the most helpful the last few months. I reached out to friends and family. Their messages reminded me who I really am during this moment of insecurity and doubt.

Second, I have been reading a book called Switch and it had three questions that were just what I needed to get out of my head and into my heart. Answering these questions helped turn off the ruminating thoughts of self-doubt and connect with my heart that knows my path through and through.

Here are the questions:

Who am I? – Think about your strengths, your beliefs, your values.
What kind of situation is this?
What would someone like me do in a situation like this?

What I noticed right away about these questions is they seem obvious. But when I sat down to answer them, the results were surprising. I also noticed how this seemingly logical process is actually a quick connection to our heart and emotion. And therefore our motivation.

I have had quite a few roadblocks lately and losses. And it can feel like the smartest thing to give up or to change paths. But once I answered the questions I realized that there is no giving up because I can’t give up who I am. So, here I am, staying on my path. Reenergized and reconnected with my heart and my motivation. And in that way, I am so very grateful for the rain on my parade. Because it reminded me that the work that I am doing is more powerful and important than little passing storms.

So the next time you are confronted with a hater, naysayer or complainer, sit down and answer these three questions. You will not only stay on your path but it will give you a delightful energy surge.
