Why I Drop F-Bombs in My Gratitude

Swear Words Are an Invitation

I never realized that declaring, “We want to be fucking grateful,” would be such a siren song for so many people. I was just speaking from my truth. Yes, I say fuck. I wasn’t raised that way. (Sorry mom.) And I turn it off when I’m around children or in a professional context. But it is part of how I speak. So when I created an online community of gratituders it just came natural to use those words.

Something amazing started to happen with that simple introduction. People showed up and right from the beginning shared authentic gratitude. Those words became an invitation to show up as we are.
To share gratitude without the platitudes.
To be real and vulnerable.
To see life with eyes wide open and dare to be fucking grateful no matter what.

I think by swearing it forces us to really stop and think and create our own statements of gratitude. Because god knows it doesn’t sound like gratitude we were raised with in recited prayers, polite thank yous, and stale Thanksgiving traditions.

I’m not saying we should all cuss in our gratitude. But we can use it as a reminder that there are no rules in gratitude. And we can use it as an invitation to be real in whatever way is true for us. Let our authentic voice emerge and join in with the other voices here in our community.

Because gratitude is important but not precious.
Because the world needs it.
Because when you speak your truth you invite others to do the same.

What gratitude has your voice brought you?

FORGOTTEN GRATITUDE: Last week I was also grateful for the delightful smell of green chile roasting, hearing the pops and the creak of the roaster turning – Full moon blessings – New growth on the pruned edge of my old jade – My strong girlfriend inspiring me with her action.
