It’s all about seeing the world differently

Last week I talked at length about the interconnections of meditation and gratitude. Today I want to shed a different and more personal light. The reason why I am drawn to gratitude and the reason why I am drawn to meditation is beautifully summed up with this quote:

“Thoughts can create such a barrier that even if you are standing before a beautiful flower, you will not be able to see it. Your eyes are covered with layers of thought. To experience the beauty of the flower you have to be in a state of meditation, not in a state of mentation. You have to be silent, utterly silent, not even a flicker of thought – and the beauty explodes, reaches to you from all directions. You are drowned in the beauty of a sunrise, of a starry night, of beautiful trees.”
~Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh

In the moments when I see the world this way I am a success. I am at my best when I can honor the beauty in front of me through my pure and unadulterated presence. It was a moment like this that led me to share my gratitude for the very first time back in May of 2011. I was sense of smell was flooded the delightfully fragrant Russian Olive blooms and nothing else existed in that moment. It was a moment of peace and of beauty that I will never forget. This is why I practice gratitude and why I practice meditation. Because the world is an explosion of beauty from all directions and I don’t want to miss it.

This Week’s Gratitude Question

speakup

What are you grateful for about your heart?

My Gratitude Experience Last Week

zoomI usually post my gratitude at night before bed but on Tuesday I was so overcome with gratitude that I posted early. I would have been in a car accident but thankfully the person saw me and got out of my way. What a small moment but it stuck with me all day because I was very aware of the possibilities that could have arisen if she hadn’t been aware for the two of us. I was grateful and still am.

Forgotten Gratitude

extraLast week I was also grateful for slow dancing all alone in a dive bar in Santa Fe … A most interesting and mind-opening This American Life that taught me about human echo-location and the power of expectations … That you, Nicole, were able to be by my side at our niece’s birthday party.

The Gratitude I Shared Last Week

Sun 1/18/2015 I’m grateful for another completed project, I’m so excited to gift it … Root Beer brewery option and a spontaneous midday outing … I’m grateful for my ever-growing capacities.
Sat 1/17/2015 I’m grateful for Eva Lucia, a delight to have in my life this year … Shaking it out on the dance floor … Boots-off relaxing.
Fri 1/16/2015 I loved driving at just the right time to watch the sunset, glowing bright as it dipped into the horizon … I loved giving a 1000% tip on my $2 tab … So much love for an intellectual and inspiring presentation … And I have self-love for breaking past my ego and selfishness to find true compassion. What a lovely day : )
Thu 1/15/2015 I’m grateful for being accepted even when I’m sad for no reason … I’m grateful for writing three cards this week, something I like doing but don’t usually prioritize … I’m grateful for knitting and delving into a project that is giving and loving … I’m grateful my dad understood what I was trying to explain … I’m grateful for reaching out and taking my first step into my future.
Wed 1/14/2015 I’m grateful for a new client and for a referral from a dear colleague all this while enjoying my favorite scone in town … yum … I’m grateful for hips and a soft landing … I’m grateful for serial and cooking … I’m grateful for warm heaters, warm layers of clothes and quiet mornings.
Tue 1/13/2015 I am still shaking with a flood of gratitude this morning for the woman driving in the lane next to me, so grateful that she saw me when I slowly changed lanes. If she hadn’t seen me and slowed I would have wrecked right into her. I am grateful for the interaction because afterward I adjusted the mirrors in my rental car and saw the huge blind spot that I was missing previously. I thought I could see fine through my mirrors but this car is different from mine. Grateful for being blessed with good fortune again and again. Thank you.
Mon 1/12/2015 I’m grateful for the flakiest chewy buttery freshly baked croissant … A rental car while my car is in the shop and not having to go without … The reminder to floss … A sweet thank you card that reminded me of the good I do in the world.
